Poitiers is the county town and is full of history. It was captured by the English, on the 8 August 1356, by Edward, the Black Prince.
Historic churches, in particular Romanesque, are the main attraction of Poitiers itself. Poitiers' tourist industry has greatly benefited from the opening of the nearby Futuroscope (see ATTRACTIONS). There is a covered market, a central shopping area and plenty of restaurants. There is a large park where once stood a roman coliseum.
There has been much work done recently in the center of the town around the town hall, to uplift and pedestrianise the area.
