civray bridge

The nearest local town is Civray, about 5 minutes by car.

It is an old town on the river Charante.

The romanesque church in the town is one of the oldest in France and the restored pre-reformation painted interior is superb.

The markets on Tuesdays and Fridays in the town are the best in the area and there is good shopping here. There are also several big supermarkets on the outskirts of the town.

There are many interesting events during the year, amongst the best of which is the night market usually the first Friday evening in August.

Other evenst include Bastille Day (14th July) celebrations, which usually include a large antique and bric-a-brac fair and end with fireworks.

There is also the local agcultural fair in late August, amongst the attractions of which are the local Poitou donkeys (this young one did not want to go home!)

The winter can also make the town attractive.
